Deep Funk from Tribe Records, Detroit Represent!

An anthology of Tribe Records 1972-1977. Underground jazz and funk from Detroit collective of musicians that include Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave and others. Tribe as well as releasing records in the early 1970's also used to produce a black awareness magazine for Detroit. In the early 1970's Detroit was a city carrying with it the musical legacy of Motown as well as the title Motor City as one of the USA's main car manufacturing centres. But, by 1970 Motown had moved to Los Angeles and the city's car industry was in decline leaving Detroit in a cultural and industrial void. Out of this wasteland came Tribe. Over a five year period a group of creative jazz musicians from Detroit took control of their own lives by running their own label, Tribe Records, where they proudly put forward the message "Music is the healing force of the Universe." Message from The Tribe contains music from this label, a mixture of Funk and deep Jazz. There are features on Jesse Jackson, Sun Ra and Watergate! Tribe contains music by Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave, Doug Hammond and more.

In the 1960s and into the 1970s jazz music in the USA was in an almost constant state of revolution, with the music and lives of African-American artists radicalised by the advent of the civil rights movement, Black Power, and a new spiritual awakening.

This album features groundbreaking and revolutionary artists such as Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, The Last Poets and Yusef Lateef as well as many rare and deep lost tracks from lesser known artists such as Creative Artists Ensemble, Granchan Moncur, Lloyd McNeill, Tyrone Washington and others.

New Thing! tells the story of Deep Jazz in the USA. Jazz Up!

Post-Civil Rights, Post- Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, Post-John Coltrane, this album shows how radical musicians developed musically, politically and spiritually at this time. 

New Thing! shows how these musicians redefined themselves and their music to present a new Black American music that encompassed Jazz with Eastern music and philosophies, space travel, classical music, ballet and African music alongside other American musics such as Gospel, Funk, Soul and Blues. The period of music covered on New Thing is from 1970-1985. (One exception and a forerunner to much of this music, the Sun Ra track "Angels and Demons at Play" is from 1957! and clearly shows a man ahead of his time in his music and ideas). New Thing! features heavyweight Jazz artists such as Alice Coltrane, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra and Archie Shepp alongside many other less-well known, but equally important artists such as Rashied Ali (who played alongside John Coltrane) and Stanley Cowell (who started one of the first independent labels for this music, Strata-East Records, along with Charles Tolliver).

"Cet album est une courbe extraordinaire de ma carrière. Il y a les années 60, 70. Ce qui est formidable, c’est qu’il y a des titres que je n’avais plus écoutés depuis longtemps. C’est un collectionneur fou, Greg de Villanova, qui a proposé ce projet à la maison de disques Comet. Il a cédé sa collection pour faire l’inventaire de mes albums. Ils ont choisi eux–mêmes les morceaux qui pouvaient intéresser le public. Il y a beaucoup de titres qui ne sont pas là et que j’aurais voulu y voir. Mais bon, c’est fait". Henri Guedon

Né il y a soixante ans à Fort-de-France, Henri Guédon a été baigné toute sa jeunesse par les sons afro-caraïbéens. Il grandit en écoutant ces musiques diffusées par les radios ou lors de spectacles d’artistes cubains ou porto-ricains."La musique cubaine m’interpellait parce que c’était celle qui avait le plus d’africanité, avec la musique haïtienne. Mais elle avait beaucoup plus de métissage culturel, la dose de mélange était extraordinaire". A 15 ans, il commence à jouer toutes sortes de percussions et créeLa Contesta avec Paul Rosine et Michel Pacquit. Aux Antilles, les percussions sont alors associées à l’Afrique primitive et remplacées par des instruments jugés plus nobles comme le violon ou le piano. Quant à la musique cubaine, elle est mise à l’index, le Cuba révolutionnaire dérangeant le conformisme antillais. Guédon choque, plaçant sur scène ses percussions devant les autres instruments et augmentant les décibels.

Arrivé à Paris en 1964, l’artiste modernise la conception de la musique afro-cubaine, délaissant les anciens mambos et cha-cha-cha pour les descargas, guajiras et boogaloos importés en ligne droite de New York. C’est le New York Sound à Paris, inspiré de Tito Puente, Ray Baretto ou Mongo Santamaria. Pourtant, Guédon se considère comme un franc-tireur:"Personne ne s’intéressait à cette musique, on jouait pour le plaisir, on ne cherchait pas à faire de succès, ni de tubes. Même si j’ai fait un tube innocemment, Santan Boula".

En 1972, à l’occasion de l’album Cosmo-zoukqui rassemble quelques-uns des meilleurs musiciens de la scène latino-antillaise, il utilise le mot "zouk", qui était alors péjoratif, pour baptiser sa musique: "Les Antillais d’Amérique avaient trouvé le mot "salsa" au lieu de dire musique afro-cubaine. Et nous, pour englober la musique des Caraïbes, on l’a appelé "zouk". Depuis, ce mot a fait son chemin". Avec le début de la vague latino en France des années 80, Guédon est un des fers de lance de la scène parisienne lors de mémorables concerts à La Chapelle des Lombards. Artiste éclectique, il écrit en 1983 l’Opéra Triangulaire, un oratorio-jazz avec un orchestre symphonique, un big band et des choeurs. La même année, il reçoit le prix de l’Académie Charles Cros pour des contes musicaux avant de partir pour de longues tournées internationales. Par Pierre René-Worms - RFI Musique
