Larry Young – Larry Young's Fuel (Arista, 1975) + Larry Young's Fuel – Spaceball (Arista, 1976)

Larry Young was part of the earliest fusion experiments in the late 60’s/early 70’s, playing on Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew”, recording with Jimi Hendrix and being part of Tony Williams’ groundbreaking “Lifetime” project.
By 1975 Young was signed to Arista and ready to fire up a full on 70’s style jazz-fusion assault with his group Fuel.
The first, “Larry Young’s Fuel” is one of THE essential electric jazz sets of the 70s – and features the classic break cut "Turn Out the Lights" – plus other great tracks that include "Floating", "Fuel for the Fire", "I Ching", "H+J=B (Hustle + Jam = Bread)" and "New York Electric Street Music".
The follow up album “Spaceball” in 1976 takes the fusion of funk, rock, soul, and jazz to new heights. The sessions found Young behind the boards as producer and behind the keyboards as a player, utilizing everything from a Mini Moog to a Hammond B3, a Fender Rhodes to a traditional acoustic piano.
The resulting project is thoroughly funky and often called the absolute best of his post-Blue Note recordings. Young was only 38 when, in 1978, he checked into hospital suffering from stomach pains, and died from untreated pneumonia.
Both albums became highly collectable “rare grooves” among the UK funk, soul and jazz fans.

Bless.

Nkengas ‎– Destruction (Orbitone Records, 1973)

Destruction by the Nkengas originally hit streets in 1973, overflowing with heavy Afro-beat, Afro-rock, and gritty highlife. Few copies were pressed, and today it can take months of searching to find a copy of this coveted gem. It came about during Osita Osadebe and His Nigeria Sound Makers's UK tour. Financial hardship led members of the Nigeria Sound Makers to break off and form another group while in London, the Nkengas.

Next, the Nkengas were introduced to Jamaican born Sonny Roberts, well known in London for his Orbitone record store and label. After the recording sessions, the band returned to Nigeria and became known as the Ikenga Super Stars of Africa, finding much success in West Africa. Despite their later popularity, the heights of funky rawness in this early effort were seldom duplicated.

Reissue by Secret Stash Records in 2013.

Secret Stash is a Minneapolis based label centered around 60's and 70's Soul, Funk, African & Latin records. Big Up!

El Rego Et Ses Commandos ‎– El Rego (Daptone Records & Voodoo Funk, 2011)

El Rego is a true legend of African Soul Music.

Here for the first time on album are 12 of his greatest recordings from the late '60s and early '70s hand-picked by Daptone Records. Afro-Soul collector/DJ Frank Gossner had spent years combing West Africa tracking down 45s by Theophile Do Rego (aka El Rego) before nally meeting him face to face in his home in Benin. The music of El Rego varies astoundingly in style and rhythm: traditional rhythms of Benin played with modern instruments, John Lee Hooker-esque blues, Fela Kuti inspired afro-beat, afro-cuban claves, and straight-up James Brown style funk.

New Orleans Soul (The Original Sound Of New Orleans Soul 1966-76) (Soul Jazz, 2014)

New Orleans Soul incorporated the soulful vocals of the gospel church, the driving beat of rhythm and blues, as well as traces of the second-line parade bands and the latinized rhythms of the city. Here you will find New Orleans soul in all its glorious variations – from the deep, deep soul of singers Aaron Neville, Willie Tee and Robert Parker to the storming northern soul of Maurice Williams and Eldridge Holmes, the funky soul of Eddie Bo, Lionel Robinson and Ernie K-Doe all alongside the Crescent City’s finest soul sisters – Irma Thomas, Betty Harris, Jean Knight, Inell Young and more!
