Oghene Kologbo - Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti (Lion Ark, 2006) & Africa Is The Future (Paris DJ's, 2017)

R-4998770-1381742384-9434

R-10940110-1520158652-1491

Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was the well known highlife musician Joe King Kologbo. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela’s personal assistant and "tape recorder". That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fosse, among others. In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin’s heaviest afrobeat ensemble.

Chico Mann ‎– Manifest Tone The Best Of Volumes 1-3 (Soundway, 2012)

R-14382535-1573403988-9132

Afro Baby - The Evolution Of The Afro-Sound In Nigeria 1970-79 (Soundway, 2004)

Funky Afro-Jazz, Soul & Afro-Highlife

Nigeria in the 1970s had one of the biggest recording industries on the continent as well as one of the most diverse. The fusion of African rhythms and culture with jazz, funk, soul and rock was an Africa wide phenomenon but nowhere was it more prolific and active than the cities and dance floors of Nigeria. These twelve rarities highlight how the Afro – Sound influenced all areas of the music scene and how it progressed throughout a very creative and energetic decade. From Funky Afro-Jazz, Soul & Afro-Highlife to big, Dance Floor Afro-Beat Nigeria led the way in West Africa at the time.

The Selenites Band ‎– Ethio Jazz Groove Project (2019, Stereophonk)

R-14309515-1571946042-9989

AIFF - Afro Soul System (Unique, 2007)

Unique Album d'AIFF. From Netherlands. Big Up!

AIFF are in long terms Afro Influenced Funk Federation. The Dutch musicians around DJ & producer Phil Martin of Social Beats & musician Ton van der Kolk aka Draaikolk play an enormous groove establishing their own version of afro-funk. Influenced by classic afro funk like Fela Kuti, they try to bring afro-funk to a new dimension. Like other actual afro funk projects, they integrate all their musical influences in their tracks. The favourite styles they melt to their unique sound range from deep-funk, soul and jazz to reggae and afro music. They just love all kinds of roots music. (Unique)

Togo Soul 70 - Selected Rare Togolese Recordings From 1971 To 1981 (Hot Casa Records, 2016)

Hot Casa Records present Togo Soul 70 (Selected Rare Togolese Recordings from 1971 to 1981)

A treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings mostly recorded in Lomé during the 70’s, a fusion of traditional voodoo chants, raw soul and Afro jazz. Finding these tracks and their rights holders hasn’t become any easier even after few trips all over this west African country bordered by Ghana, Benin & Burkina Faso.

Hot Casa Records decided to select 13 tracks, a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country’s recording history, including international stars like Bella Bellow (who even performed to Maracana stadium in Brazil), or Roger Damawuzan, compared as the James Brown from Lomé, and forgotten tapes and brilliant songs in Mina, Kabyié and Fon languages. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in Togo was at the time, even if the political context influenced their creation.

Afro Funk ‎– Body Music (Chairman, 1973, Secret Stash Records, 2012)

R-5891045-1484388927-1996

West-African styles and American Funk. Body Music, Afro Funk's 1975 LP, was recorded and released in London, England.

The band was comprised mostly of West-African expatriates residing there. At the time, the city was host to a vibrant African music scene. The massive success of Osibisa created a swarm of young bands trying to use London as a launching pad for international stardom. Unfortunately, Afro Funk did not find the success they were looking for and Body Music became their only album. The deep funk grooves and driving afrobeat rhythms featured on this rare LP have made it a desired addition to record collections around the world.

After its small private press release in London on "Kabana Records," Body Music was also released in extremely limited quantites by Kojo Asare's Chairman Records in Ghana. Despite the well crafted mix of various West-African styles and American funk, without the support of a label and no major touring it quickly faded into obscurity. Today copies rarely surface.
